The Return Address

For fifteen years my business was France, and I never once admitted it was pointing at anything.

The redirects lived on free.fr. The traffic came off French Google, sorted locale by locale — I built a hundred and forty-five of them, sixty-nine languages, and every one was a way of aiming myself west while calling it arbitrage.

Graph manipulation. Money moving through a node I happened to route through. That’s what I told myself it was.

Here’s what you learn reading URL strings for a living: the message and the carrier are not the same thing. The carrier is the pipe — the redirect, the handshake, the header nobody reads. The message is what survives when you strip all of it away.

I spent a career optimizing carriers. I never once asked what I was actually trying to send.

Then I finally read the header.

The affiliate France is ending. Good. It was only ever the commute.

The France that mattered was always the return address. I just spent fifteen years learning to read my own handwriting.
